About Spiritual Direction
-
Spiritual Direction is a one-hour, monthly meeting where you can explore your personal experience of God in a space filled with silence, prayer, and contemplation.
It’s a safe, non-judgmental environment to share your thoughts, feelings, questions, or doubts about God. Your spiritual director will listen deeply and offer insights or reflective questions to help you go deeper in your journey.
Whether you're seeking clarity, connection, or just a space to process, Spiritual Direction invites you to pause, reflect, and grow.
-
Spiritual Direction is not a Bible study, prayer meeting, or pastoral counseling session. While those are valuable in their own right, Spiritual Direction is something unique.
It’s not about giving advice or telling you what to do.
It’s not about offering opinions on what God might be doing in your life.
It’s not about confessing sins or sharing anything you’re not comfortable sharing.
There’s no judgment, guilt, or shame in this space—only listening, reflection, and support.
Spiritual Direction is also not mysterious or esoteric. There are no secret rituals or “new age” practices here. Christian Spiritual Direction has deep roots, stretching back to the earliest days of the Church.
-
Spiritual Direction focuses on meaningful conversations centered around your unique journey with God. Some topics often explored include:
Your experience of God in daily life
Your thoughts and feelings about God
What God might think or feel about you
Questions, doubts, or uncertainties about faith
Where you sense God working in your life
How God may be speaking to you through Scripture, thoughts, feelings, or dreams
It’s a space to slow down, reflect, and listen deeply to where God may be leading you.
-
Spiritual Direction is for anyone who wants to explore and deepen their experience of God. It can be especially helpful if you:
Long for a deeper sense of God’s love in your life
Feel that faith has become more burdensome than life-giving
Have questions or doubts about what you believe
Struggle with feeling disconnected, fearful, or angry
Are discerning an important decision or life transition
No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, Spiritual Direction offers a safe and supportive space to reflect, process, and grow.
What Is Group Spiritual Direction?
Group Spiritual Direction is similar to individual direction but takes place in a small group setting. Each member has a chance to share while the rest of the group responds prayerfully, offering support and reflection.
This experience can be profoundly meaningful for those seeking spiritual connection through shared interaction. Group direction also has practical benefits:
More affordable: The cost is often shared among members.
A great introduction: It’s a helpful way to explore spiritual direction before committing to one-on-one sessions.
Flexible format: Groups can meet online or in person, so participation is possible even if you’re outside the Nashville area.
To ensure a safe and respectful space, group members commit to strict confidentiality and learn how to listen well and respond appropriately to others.
Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone who desires to discuss and explore their experience of God.
-
Yes and no.
Spiritual Direction shares some similarities with therapy—both involve regular, confidential one-on-one sessions. However, the focus is quite different.
Therapy tends to be problem-centered, psychologically focused, or geared toward moral guidance and decision-making.
Spiritual Direction, on the other hand, is Spirit-centered. The primary focus is on your relationship with God—exploring where God is present and active in your life.
Many people find that therapy and spiritual direction complement each other well, as both can support personal growth and healing in unique ways.
-
The term “director” can be a bit misleading. It might suggest a hierarchical role where one person gives instructions or advice about prayer, decisions, or faith. In reality, a spiritual director acts more like a spiritual companion, guide, or even a soul friend—someone who walks alongside you on your spiritual journey.
The true "director" is God, and the spiritual director’s role is to help you discern God’s presence, activity, and voice in your life. They do this by:
Asking thoughtful questions.
Reframing what you share to offer new perspectives.
Joining you in prayerful reflection.
A spiritual director doesn’t give advice or tell you what to do. Instead, they create a safe, sacred space where you can slow down, listen, and explore where God may be moving in your life and the world.
-
The first session is a time to explore and set the foundation for your spiritual direction journey. Together, you and the spiritual director may discuss:
What spiritual direction is—and isn’t
Your needs, hopes, and expectations as you begin this process
Backgrounds and perspectives: Sharing values, biases, styles, religious beliefs, and spiritual experiences to ensure mutual understanding
Past experiences with spiritual direction, counseling, or related practices
Compatibility: Exploring whether the director’s approach, training, and experience align with your needs
Practical matters are also addressed, including:
Frequency of meetings, payment details, and procedures for cancellations or rescheduling
Standards of confidentiality and supervision—ensuring your privacy while outlining exceptions if needed
The acceptable types and frequency of communication (phone, email, texts) between sessions
The process for ending the spiritual direction relationship, if and when that time comes
Finally, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and ensure you feel comfortable moving forward. At the end of the session (or sometimes the second), you and the director will review and agree to a spiritual direction covenant—a shared commitment that sets clear boundaries and expectations for your time together.
-
Absolutely. Spiritual direction is open to everyone, regardless of religious background. While the convictions and practices of Eremos are rooted in the Christian tradition, our spiritual directors welcome anyone who is eager to explore their experience of the divine—however that may take shape for them.
We believe God is at work in all of humanity, and spiritual direction provides a space to reflect on your unique spiritual journey in a way that honors your perspective.
-
Spiritual direction sessions typically take place once a month, though more frequent meetings can be arranged if desired. This monthly rhythm provides ample time to reflect on God’s presence and movement in your life between sessions, allowing the process to be both intentional and meaningful.
-
Absolutely. If you’re unable to find a spiritual director near you, sessions can be held remotely via phone or Zoom. These virtual sessions offer the same opportunity for reflection and connection and typically occur once a month, just like in-person meetings.
No matter where you are located, you can still engage in meaningful spiritual direction.
-
The cost for a one-hour session varies depending on the spiritual director’s individual rate, with an average range of $50–$120 per session.
To learn more about specific fees, please contact one of our spiritual directors directly.
